Ascend Your Start-Up: Week 4, Chapter 4

The story telling of climbing Everest and building your start up hits the peak in chapter 4. There are other factors to consider now. Just as Yu considers her descent down the mountain, the product is going through pricing, customer base, and customers of customers.

In healthcare most prices are pre-determined (everything falls under Medicare pricing, but in order to say we can choose our own insurance in the U.S.A. people act like this does not happen). But it is important to use some of the pricing techniques discussed in this chapter: supply and demand analysis, extension pricing, etc....

The big take-away for me was not only selling to one customer base, but selling to the customer base of those customers. This builds strong alliances in that market. Perhaps you develop a doo-dad, and this doo-dad is sold to COMPY, and COMPY sells to FRED. FRED loves the doo-dad portion of the project and is developing a new product that could use a doo-dad. FRED will look to buy doo-dads from you. Or maybe FRAN is looking to upgrade a current project and has worked with COMPY in the past. She asks a representative from COMPY if they have any insight in how to explore the G capabilities, if a good relationship is built, COMPY might suggest a doo-dad.

Surfing The Tsunami: Week 4, Chapter 4

This chapter was about adapting, which to me means learning new situations. While the class focuses on Marketing strategies, and this book discusses the importance of knowing how to use the internet, and its tools to create a successful marketing campaign, I am using it to further my own cause.

Marketing is putting yourself out there to make new connections and reach people regarding your product. My product is me. I hope to work within the system to create better work environments for nurses, nursing assistants and other hospital workers to alleviate the concern of high turnover. Putting the importance of hospitals not only on the patients, but the key people that work to make the patients and their families lives better.

While I have already started on this journey, this book reminds me to do more. In that vain I have reached out to more nursing leaders who post interesting information on LinkedIn, and have followed and connected with a few. I have also been using it as a bit of a blog format for me as well.

And to quote Rosalind Russell as Auntie Mame: Life is a Banquet, and most poor suckers are starving to death.

Guerrilla Marketing: Chapter 4, Week 4

This chapter focuses on target audiences in the beginning then moves to marketing strategy in the second half. To be completely honest, this shift in the chapter lost me a bit. While there was a bit of a transfer in the text, I feel a supportive strategy would be to devote a chapter each to these topics. With marketing strategy being the first chapter discussed.

In earlier chapters, discussing the fundamentals and through our reading of Ascend Your Start-Up, knowing exactly what you are trying to sell is extremely important. It takes that knowledge to help develop your strategy and those together will help determine your audience. My main concern is missing out on other audiences if you focus on one or two.

Finally, the information about women felt a little sexist to me. Especially on the myths (obviously, they are myths), which makes me wonder if this was something the author was called on at one point. I also thing that, in today's environment, it is always best to keep a broad audience for marketing purchases.

I am including a clip from an incredible (albeit dated) movie from 1983 starring Michael Keaton and Teri Garr. Enjoy!

Guerrilla Marketing: Week 3, Chapter 3

The nurse in me saw the memory crunch of words ending in ent and immediately wondered what an ear, nose and throat doctor had to do with marketing. And perhaps the nurse in me recognizes a lot of the information for marketing applies to nursing as well.

What really stood out was the discussion on the Marlboro Man. Born in the early 70's and growing up through the 80's, I remembered the Marlboro Man ads, everywhere. Most specifically was a large picture in Union Station. To think how this campaign, with the right commitment, flourished throughout those years to become the number one cigarette is pretty ingenious. I also, sadly, remember my friends and I smoking Marlboro to be cool. I eventually quit after the realization nothing would ever make me look cool.

What I began to wonder while reading this chapter, was how a small company would be able to use the same marketing techniques as those used for The Marlboro Man. This was answered later in the chapter with the example of the furniture company. When the small company has a foot-hold, that is the time to augment their approach by incorporating an assortment of marketing techniques as well as building the business.

Ascend Your Start-Up: Week 3, Chapter 3

This little piggy went to market

This little piggy stayed home...

One thing to know about me, I love TV. Give me all of it; streaming, network, cable... And with that love comes an affinity for what it offers. Chapter 3 in Ascend Your Start-Up reminded me of the series on Apple TV regarding the creator of WeWork. While I am sure some of it was done for dramatic affect, I believe it shows how important it is to have the right people around you. The main point is the company grew too fast without the funds to cover it, and the leader would never take no for an answer.

The show was a great example of how not to organize a start-up. Out of the four viable leaders Yu discusses, WeWork only had a Thought Leader. While this thought leader was the main problem, as in not listening to those who were telling him the warning signs, there was no clear Challenger, Collaborator, or Operator. Those leaders bring valuable input into an organization. The will also consider obstacles to their success and be able to effectively discuss them with everyone.

Having the right people around you helps you to ascend in grow, not only in business but in life.

Surfing the Tsunami: Week 3, Chapter 3

The three perspectives in AI reminded me of a conversation that took place a couple of summers ago. My son, now 22, was discussing automatic cars and all the benefits. He was the optimist. My husband, citing safety concerns was adamant that automatic cars would never work. As they were looking for a tie-breaker (me), I said it is inevitable and we can either learn to live with it or fight it.

Of course I see one of the roles as a realist, is to understand that while AI is inevitable, it also takes time. While I am not a programmer, being able to create AI to work in an environment without people to ensure that it is safe will take time (ex: automatic cars).

I agree that it is important to learn, understand and accept AI. With all new technology there will be a learning curve. I also feel it is important to adjust educational curriculums to incorporate general computer education to include programming, so that more people will be able to work in thee environments as new careers will spring up with new technology.

Surfing the Tsunami: Week 2, Chapter 2

Maybe I am just old, but this was my first thought on AI:

Now that I have embarrassed myself, I will discuss the chapter.

I agree completely with AI and programming being compared to a maze or a board game. I can also see a resemblance between a puzzle, ensuring that all the pieces are put in the proper places. Most people when starting a puzzle being with the outline, from there pieces may be organized by color, pattern, etc... This helps in putting the pieces in the proper places. Just as an automatic car might have started with, what kind of sensors do we need and where will they go, to plugging in the software for those sensors to work.

I only have one bone to pick. There is a statement made that I am hoping was made in error. On page 48 of the paperback, when discussing the medical field and robots, the author says, "there are already robotic surgeries, in some cases more accurate and consistent than human-managed surgeries..." I feel the need to express these are called robotic-assisted surgeries. The main benefits being: less invasive and a lower risk of infection. A surgeon controls the robot as a second, third, fourth, and more set of hands (see picture below). There are also surgeries that would be unsuccessful with a robot so the surgeon will have to perform an open surgery.
For reference (other than the surgeon not wearing a cap or mask) this is a more realistic view of a robotic surgery:

Surfing the Tsunami: Week 1, Chapter 1

As I read the first chapter for Surfing the Tsunami I tried to think about areas where I have seen artificial intelligence. The first item that came to mind was my phone. Here is an item that can hear what I am talking about and the next moment I am looking on a website, social media page, etc... here comes some ads regarding my discussion. Of course, it would be nice if they sent the ED ads to my husband and not me (and yes, I am kidding).

Although none of these items can think for themself (Sorry Hal), I do not believe we are too far off on that front. As I am in the world of healthcare I thought of the following scenario:

Manny discusses with family how he has been feeling tired since their camping trip. Phone hears this and Manny receives information from updated camping supplies to help you feel like you are sleeping at home to various bug sprays that all repel ticks. TICKS - codeword in ad is noticed by AI, information spat out: ticks, Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Fever.... Information hits Manny's various feeds and he begins to wonder if he might have been bitten by a tick and did not know it. Manny goes to doctor, doctor finds tick on Manny's right side with all the tell-tale signs of Lyme Disease.

Now that is obviously AI being used for good. Sadly, I live in America and I am sure that many will incorporate techniques of AI into finding ways to make money.

I'm Tired!

Very fascinating article as I, a 51 year old female obtaining her masters degrees online (I currently have my Masters in Nursing), also have 2 college age kids - okay 1, my son is graduating this weekend.

I found the article fascinating, but something hit me when it began to discuss the conservative school in Texas.

While kids that age are definitely bored attending some of the general ed requirements, I feel the mental health issue goes much further than Covid. These students are the first students who have witnessed a myriad of school/mass shootings on TV, things that become discussed at their high schools and grade schools. They see their parents worried for them and their safety. They have witnessed a presidential administration where a lot of them questioned our country due to the actions/words/hate coming from someone they were told their entire life to admire. They saw the video of George Floyd dying, the video of white men in a pick up truck chasing down and shooting a black man, they have seen, first-hand, racism, hatred, hypocrisy but leaders, adults who they have looked up to, friends, etc...

Maybe they are tired because we have forced them to grow up too quickly. And no, not everyone is doing the forcing but many are. There was a point when my daughter thought I was disappointed in her for not going to a 4 year university right out of high school, I had to remind her she was present at my college graduation. But she needed time, she was not clear on her future goals (the opposite of my son who knew what he wanted to do from grade school).

Maybe we need to give these kids a little more time. A little more understanding. Of course they are tired, and I do not blame them one bit! I encouraged my son to get his degree in 5 years as his major required almost 140 credit hours to graduate, and hard credit hours at that (Chemical Engineering).

And maybe, at a conservative college in Texas, those kids don't feel that pressure because, and I hate to say this, but most of the shouts of "if he just complied he wouldn't have died," rang out from conservatives. The previous president (conservative?) stated that there were good people on both sides during the Charleston marches/riots/whatever you want to call them. And as some of those good people were throwing around racial slurs, maybe???

And I am not trying to say the liberal side has been any better. Both sides need to learn how to be able to interact with each other. But I am saying our children are seeing this, and either thinking this is the norm, or are disappointed that, right now, this is the norm.

The pandemic is just icing on the cake. A very sad cake.

I did not have to worry about these things as I grew up. The NRA was all about education and gun safety then, politicians worked across the aisle and did not hold up nominations or bills because of vendettas across the aisle, and racism, okay that still existed... But there was no pandemic. And because I never had to worry about climate change as I was growing up, we are putting that on the backs of our children too.

Give these kids a break. They need one. They need to have fun without worry. We need to let them take their time and not push them into adulthood. Because being an adult kind of sucks.

Guerrilla Marketing: Chapter 2

Chapter 2 focuses on the need for guerrilla marketing, with its focus on the benefits of this technique for entrepreneurs.

One point that jumped out at me was that as a small business there is an quick knowledge of what marketing techniques are working and which ones are not. Levinson notes that this type of knowledge can increase the effectiveness of the marketing campaign. When asking those in marketing agencies what types of campaigns were being used that made entrepreneurs successful, they were unable to answer. One might even say that those agencies are not seeing the forest for the trees.

Within guerrilla marketing it is also important to use intelligent marketing and this includes a strategy and how to convey your message. Putting out a flyer that sends a message that is different from website can be confusing for the customer which can result in a loss. As a new small company with a new product it is important to send the same message through different mediums. Levinson states this can be done by narrowing down your message to no more then seven words. This is not an easy task, but by consistently streamlining from a long message to a shorter one, the core of what you want to say will shine through.

Now, I recently had the following ad show up in one of my feeds. I felt it contained many of the items in guerrilla marketing; creative, topical, funny, and directed at one market (the side sleeper). I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Guerrilla Marketing: Chapter 1

I need to get this out: while I know what is meant by the term Guerrilla in the title, all I can picture is an actual gorilla. (Next I will search on how to put a picture in my blogs!)

The first chapter in this book discusses the differences between traditional marketing and guerrilla marketing, with the emphasis that guerrilla marketing is geared towards small businesses. Guerrilla marketing focuses on being imaginative, and focusing on the individual. And cheap. Who doesn't love cheap? Fine, there are people who will always want to pay the most money for something, but I will always admire the good-will shopper who can put together an outfit that fits their personality to the "Real Housewife of X" who only shops at high-end boutiques in an attempt to be an individual.

While focusing on the small business guerilla marketing is able to focus on one factor for success, profits. Levinson mentions seeing companies break sales records while losing money. To wrap my head around this concept I think of some marketing campaigns I have seen by big and small companies, and ended up settling on campaigns by politicians who target a small (town/county) vs big (state/federal) areas. My state representative kick started her campaign by going door to door and speaking at veterans associations (she is a veteran herself). She came to my house, knocked on the door and as she was not immediately scared off by my dogs we spoke a while regarding her views on items I felt important to me. In the process she earned my vote and the votes of many of the veterans in my area. In opposition to this, no Governor, federal representative or presidential hopeful has ever spoken to me directly, you mostly just see campaigns that tell us how bad the other side is, making me have to do a lot of work on the back-end to see what they have voted for in the past as you can not trust what a politician says.

I also enjoy the me vs you aspect of guerrilla marketing, which focuses on the 'you.' I see this approach creating a strong impact as everyone wants to feel special and important. I am more apt to purchase a product if it has a direct impact on me or my family (for the better, obviously). For example, I love to travel, so between a company that tells me how many awards they have won and a small business that tells me how I can have fun, learn, and relax, I am more interested in the smaller business as those are the items that will affect my choice of travel location.

Ascend Your Start Up, Chapter 2

Yu discusses a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) in the second chapter. She quotes Eric Ries in removing anything that does not contribute (to the learning you seek), but can also be applied to the project. A comparison with bringing the bare minimum on a climb up Mt Everest.

In applying this to myself as a project, I applied the following decisions from the book with my answers:

#6: What is your minimal viable project? Yu states the product must be marketable. So, am I marketable? Yes, I am as is everyone else. Many people apply marketability to an actual product, but are we not selling ourselves whenever we apply for a job, go on a date, meet someone new, etc... So, I am marketable in that I am a good nurse and a great leader. In exploring the viability Yu asks who cares about the problem that needs resolution, who else can solve the problem, and what type of team is needed to achieve your vision. Due to a nursing shortage many healthcare institutions are continually looking for ways to retain their staff, other administration can help to solve the problem (which has notoriously not worked for a long time), and the team that is needed is a supportive administration.

#7: How will you pilot your product? Here Yu makes a great analogy in, "avoid boiling the ocean." In short, start small. How are small ways I can start. First, I need to address issues and problems that can be seen and discussed among those in healthcare. While this blog is for class, I have decided that along with this, I should post more on LinkedIn, as well as connect with more member of the nursing community and healthcare in general. Yu also specifies creating a hypothesis and how I will solve that problem. My hypotheses will be posted on LinkedIn as a post. With this I hope that with current and future connections reading this post it will help people to provide answers on how I look at problems and how they can be resolved. Feel free to connect with me!

Ascend Your Startup, Chapter 1, Thoughts

This is not only my thoughts about the book, but a little about me as well.

The book was a great read yesterday, and helped me to realize that sometimes you need to just market yourself in order to achieve your goals. While I understood and was extremely interested in the first five micro-decisions and relating them to the author's climbing Mt Everest, I was more fascinated by the introduction and the lessons taught there.

Helen Yu discusses meeting the co-founders of an organization. What stood out the most was how she praised the pair for acknowledging what they did not know. While I do not prescribe to the "there are no stupid questions" philosophy, I do believe in asking questions when you are eager to gain knowledge. Tying this into marketing myself, I try to live by the philosophy of building people up. This came about while hearing people discuss the ideas they had for products, futures, etc... and hearing so many pointing out the errors in their thinking. I decided to take a more positive approach to others ideas and found that by becoming interested in what they hoped to achieve in their life I made easy friendships as well as people who would also come to me with questions and concerns.

Within the first chapter Yu states, "The reason you set out on this journey will not change - but your vision and/or strategy might." When going through school for my Bachelor's in Nursing, we were encouraged to prepare a 'portfolio' with school accomplishments, etc... In there we were told to write a 5-year plan. I balked at this idea, as I did have a goal of working in an ICU at the time. But before that came to fruition, I discovered how nursing careers transcended so many different areas and specialties, opening up more possibilities to me. While my strategies have changed throughout the last 11 years, my goal to create better working environments for nurses has not.

Ascend Your Start-Up: Week 8, book review

As there was no 8th chapter in this book I opted to do an overall review.  In short: I loved this book. My favorite of the three we needed ...
