Ascend Your Startup, Chapter 1, Thoughts

This is not only my thoughts about the book, but a little about me as well.

The book was a great read yesterday, and helped me to realize that sometimes you need to just market yourself in order to achieve your goals. While I understood and was extremely interested in the first five micro-decisions and relating them to the author's climbing Mt Everest, I was more fascinated by the introduction and the lessons taught there.

Helen Yu discusses meeting the co-founders of an organization. What stood out the most was how she praised the pair for acknowledging what they did not know. While I do not prescribe to the "there are no stupid questions" philosophy, I do believe in asking questions when you are eager to gain knowledge. Tying this into marketing myself, I try to live by the philosophy of building people up. This came about while hearing people discuss the ideas they had for products, futures, etc... and hearing so many pointing out the errors in their thinking. I decided to take a more positive approach to others ideas and found that by becoming interested in what they hoped to achieve in their life I made easy friendships as well as people who would also come to me with questions and concerns.

Within the first chapter Yu states, "The reason you set out on this journey will not change - but your vision and/or strategy might." When going through school for my Bachelor's in Nursing, we were encouraged to prepare a 'portfolio' with school accomplishments, etc... In there we were told to write a 5-year plan. I balked at this idea, as I did have a goal of working in an ICU at the time. But before that came to fruition, I discovered how nursing careers transcended so many different areas and specialties, opening up more possibilities to me. While my strategies have changed throughout the last 11 years, my goal to create better working environments for nurses has not.

Ascend Your Start-Up: Week 8, book review

As there was no 8th chapter in this book I opted to do an overall review.  In short: I loved this book. My favorite of the three we needed ...
